Things to Do on Memorial Day Weekend in York

Memorial Day is an important day for many Americans. Many people have a day off for Memorial Day, so you may want to plan a weekend of fun events centered around attending a Memorial Day Ceremony.

Memorial Day is considered by many to be the unofficial start of summer, and there are lots of fun ways to kick that off in York County. Here are a few to think about as you start planning.

    1. PA Civil War Trail

What better way to learn to appreciate our nation’s fallen soldiers than a visit to Pennsylvania’s Civil War Trail, a trail spanning 13 significant locations along Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country Roads Region. You and your family can explore significant Civil War events leading up to the historic Battle of Gettysburg.

In addition to learning and seeing some of our nation’s most important military history first hand, you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy some great shopping and dining opportunities along the way — an educational and fun experience that’s perfect for Memorial Day weekend in York, PA.

    2. Flavorfest at Mount Hope

Presented by Mount Hope Winery, Flavorfest at Mount Hope will feature 30 wineries providing complimentary samples, attractions, musicians, food and artisans. This free event has plenty of free parking and is a perfect family-friendly activity for Memorial Day weekend. This premier wine festival will run from Saturday, May 26, through Sunday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The wineries will also have products available for purchase.

Find the event at the Mount Hope Winery, located at 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. You can call the winery at 717-665-7021 if you have any questions.

    3. Minature Railroad Public Open House

This event takes place on the fourth Monday of each month from February through October, and that just so happens to be Memorial Day in May! Take advantage of this fantastic attraction being open on a day when you and the whole family have the chance to get together. Since it’s open from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 28, it’s the perfect after-dinner event to wind down and relax.

Located at the Miniature Railroad Club of York at 381 Wheatfield St., York, is a 501(c)3 organization that focuses on promoting both the importance of railroads on the county’s history and economy and the hobby of model railroading. They also value using railroad layouts as educational tools.

Along with the fourth Monday of every month, the club is open the third Saturday of every month from February through October. Admission is by donation. Keep in mind, however, that no public bathroom is available at the Miniature Railroad Club, and no person under the age of 18 is allowed without an adult. Call them at (717) 430-6129 or (717) 434-4277 if you have any questions.

    4. Sunday Brunch at The Handsome Cab

Nothing beats brunch on a late Sunday morning, especially when you can enjoy it with family and friends you’re spending Memorial Day weekend with. One popular choice is The Handsome Cab.

Located at 106 N. George St., York, this spot boasts one of the best Bloody Marys in York County. The Handsome Cab’s Sunday brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (717) 793-2413 for more information, or book a reservation online.

This is just a small sampling of all the fantastic things to see and do in York, Pennsylvania, from museums and historic sites to fun and games, shopping and dining and more. It’ll take more than a weekend to cover it all, but hopefully, some of the above options have given you some ideas for how to get started this Memorial Day weekend in York.
