If you’re looking for an invitation for fun and adventure, consider this your invite! First Friday is an event held in downtown York throughout the year, and it is not an event to be missed.
York, PA is known for many wonderful features and amenities. Each year, tourists come to this “factory tour capital of the world” to take one of the many tours in the region. York is filled with green spaces, good schools and economic opportunity.
What Is First Friday?
On the first Friday of each month, York throws a big party, and everyone is invited. Streets are closed down, and special events are held to attract visitors and locals. Expect to see live entertainment and great music. Some bars and facilities host games or special attractions. Markets and boutiques are open until 9 p.m., and the whole area generally comes alive.
First Friday is meant to celebrate the local arts scene as well as the local Downtown York venues, cultural hotspots, nightlife establishments, restaurants and stores. Most of the action takes place between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., so plan ahead.
What Can You Expect?
This local tradition started in 2006 and supports local businesses and artists, but it is only in past years that it has really taken off. Local venues pull out all the stops to create an interactive and exciting night that’s also family-friendly.
Today, many First Fridays have themes, usually related to the sponsors of the event. The themes affect what you can expect to see at the event. Past First Fridays have included many attractions, such as:
- Samples of food and drinks
- Local artists displaying work
- Events for students
- Meet-and-greet events
- Street Food
- Bounce houses
- Campaigns for local initiatives
- Fundraising events
- Special sales at stores, restaurants and boutiques
- Live broadcasts
- Radio station events and booths
- Live performances
- Local celebrity appearances
- Interactive street events
- Art installations
- Beer gardens
- Local tours
- Scavenger hunts
- Sports and events tournaments (York First Fridays have had pickleball tournaments before!)
- Hashtag murals
- Orchestra recitals
- Literary readings
- And more
First Fridays are usually a mix of families, couples and even students from nearby universities and colleges. This is an inclusive event with something for everyone.
